School Governors are representatives of the wider school community and include people drawn from the parents, the school staff, other members of the local community and/or people with special skills that could benefit the work of the governing body. Governing bodies play three key roles:
- Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
- Holding the senior leader(s) to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff
- Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent
Governors are either elected or appointed. The responsibility for appointing or electing governors (not all types of governor appear on every governing body) is as follows:
- Parent and staff governors are elected by the rest of the parents and staff of the individual school. Should not enough parents stand for election then the governing body can appoint a parent governor.
- The governing body appoints community and sponsor governors.
- The Local Authority appoints Local Authority governors.
- Members may appoint up to 5 Member Governors
