NEW: Consultation on PSHE/RSE

As a part of your child’s education at Bodmin College, we promote personal wellbeing and development through a comprehensive Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education programme. PSHE education is the curriculum subject that helps provide young people the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live safe, healthy, productive lives furthering their development into responsible global citizens.

Your child currently studies elements of PSHE through curriculum subjects including but not limited to RE, Science, IT and PE. The PSHE policy and curriculum at Bodmin College are currently under review and from September 2022, PSHE will feature more heavily as part of your child’s tutor programme with many aspects delivered by their tutor and head of year, alongside visiting speakers.

As a school, we are committed to working in partnership with parents and as such I’d like to invite you to be a part of our consultation on PSHE. The short survey which can be accessed here https://forms.office.com/r/47FfKG20jw will give you the opportunity to share your views on our current provision as well as shape our future curriculum. Our students will also have the opportunity to formally share their views too.

I thank you in advance for completing this survey and I look forward to writing to you again soon, following the review, where I can share an updated policy with you. Mrs Armstrong.

NEW: 2023-24 Expansion Proposal & Consultation

Bodmin College currently has a capacity of 1200 11-16 pupils with a Published Admission Number (PAN) of 240 students per academic year, plus a 400-place sixth form. Over the past three years, the increasing school-age population of Bodmin and its surrounding area has placed pressure on the availability of school places locally beyond the 240 PAN at Bodmin College. Since 2019, Bodmin College has made a number of adaptations to meet the increasing demand for secondary school places and to ensure that children within the Bodmin area continue to have access to high quality education within their locality. This has included increasing staffing and resources, as well as re-organising existing accommodation. Population forecasts for 2022-2026 have shown that demand for places will continue to exceed the existing PAN up until 2026.

To meet the needs of the local community and continue to provide high quality local education for secondary age children within Bodmin and the surrounding area, Bodmin College has been working closely with Cornwall Council on developing a carefully considered expansion proposal, which will be entirely funded by Cornwall Council through its Education Basic Need Capital Programme. The plans include:

  • A new single storey building comprising of 6 new classrooms (including 2 specialist ICT classrooms), new toilet facilities and additional office facilities.
  • A two storey extension to existing canteen to provide further indoor seated dining areas, a student conference room, cycle storage and resource storage.
  • Conversion of two existing classrooms into brand new science laboratories.
  • Relocation of car-parking facilities.

Designs have been carefully planned to retain the open, spacious and calm environment of the College and to protect green spaces for current and future generations.

As stakeholders with a vested interest in the college, we invite parents/carers and students to take part in the consultation process. This document that explains more fully the expansion proposal, the consultation process (including details about our virtual information evening) and how you can submit your views. Please note that this consultation refers solely to the principle of expansion as a ‘Significant Change’ under DfE requirements, and not the Planning Application and build processes. The Planning Application processes will be undertaken separately by Cornwall Council, the Local Authority (LA).
