End of Term Principal's Letter

Dear Parent/Carer,

As we come to the end of the 2021-22 academic year, it seems difficult to comprehend how different things are now to the start of the year. As the restrictions of a pandemic begin to fade to a distant memory (and one where we hope they will stay), it has been wonderful to see a return of all things 'normal'. One thing that will and should stay with us all is the sense of pride that we share of our students and the resilience, determination and positivity that they have shown throughout. This term has been an incredibly busy but joyous one with so many events and activities taking place once again and all attended with an even greater sense of enthusiasm! We have seen even greater numbers of students attending clubs, getting involved in sporting activities, Duke of Edinburgh award, music, dance and drama, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) events, arts activities, trips, visits and so much more. And it's not just been within college; there have been even more opportunities for community links too.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank our parents and carers for the support you have given us as always. Your feedback is important to us and your participation in our surveys and consultations have helped us shape your child's educational provision and care for the better as we continue to 'Strive for Excellence'.

As we head into the summer holidays, please find below, a summary reminder of important key dates and information

End of Term (Tomorrow)

As per the family calendar and previous correspondence, the last day of this academic year is Friday 22nd July 2022 and on the request of the Student Council is a Non-Uniform Day. The school day will finish at 1.00pm for students in years 8 &10 and at 1.10pm for students in years 7 & 9 & 12. Buses have been organised to pick up at these times. Please note that students who catch public buses will need to make alternative arrangements. If your child does not use bus transport, please arrange for their safe travel home at the relevant times as outlined above. Due to the earlier finish, the canteens will be providing extra food at break time, so if your child is eligible for free school meals they should collect them at break time.

Results and Enrolment Days

Specific information has been sent to Year 10-13 parents with further details including personalised timings but for your convenience, a reminder of the dates are shown below:

  • 6th Form and A Level Results Day - Thursday 18th August in the 6th Form Centre.
  • GCSE Results & Enrolment Day - Thursday 25th August in the 6th Form Centre.

Individual letters have been sent with specific timings per tutor group.

Start of the New Academic Year

Please note that for 2022-23, we are continuing to operate a slightly staggered end to the school day with Years 7 & 8 finishing at the slightly earlier time of 3:20pm in order to reduce traffic congestion in the local area. We encourage walking/cycling and respectfully ask parents to consider residents and recommend using parking in Bodmin Town Car Parks or Bodmin Leisure Centre to ease traffic around the college site.

In preparation for the new school term, please click here for uniform, equipment and PE kit guidance. Please ensure that your child has all the necessary clothing, stationery and equipment ready to learn at the start of term. This must include a school bag and a weatherproof coat. Please note that skirts and shorts should be tailored and ¾ thigh length. Lycra skirts, leggings, tracksuit bottoms and denim are not permitted.

This information along with the Family Calendar is also available on the college website www.bodmincollege.co.uk (please note the website may be closed for essential upgrades at certain points during the break).

Please be aware that the Department for Education has released updated guidance for schools on student attendance. Amendments to the 2006 Regulations remove any reference to family holidays, extended leave and the statutory threshold of ten school days. The amendments also make it very clear that Headteachers may not grant leave of absence (holiday) during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. Please note that under the revised guidance, unauthorised absence may also be subject to a Fixed Penalty Notice. We are currently revising our Attendance Policy and will write again in September with further information, however, I felt it fair to outline these changes to you in advance of the new academic year and being mindful of the fact that families often use the summer months to plan their family holidays.

Please also note that from September we will be operating an 'Off and Away All Day' policy for mobile phones. Full details of this have been sent separately and are also available on our website.

Furthermore, Cornwall Council has received funding from the Government's Household Support Fund to help families with the increased cost of living. The money will support households in the most need against rising living costs, including energy, food and water bills. Families with a child or children in Reception to Year 11 who are eligible for benefits-related Free School Meals can claim a cash payment of £80 per child by completing the application form at Cost of living support payments - Cornwall Council.

Finally, reception will be closing for the summer at 2pm tomorrow 22nd July 2022 with some limited opening on the results days.

May I take this opportunity to thank you sincerely for your support during this academic year and wish you all an enjoyable and safe summer.

Yours sincerely
